How many wet diapers should a newborn have?

The rule of thumb for the first week: about one wet diaper per day of life (one on day one, two on day two), reaching six or more per 24 hours from around day five onward. Wet diapers are the most honest at-home sign that a newborn is getting enough milk, which is why every paediatrician asks about them.

Wet diapers day by day

AgeWet diapers per 24 hDirty diapers per 24 h
Day 11+1+ (black, tarry meconium)
Day 22+1–2 (dark green)
Day 33+2+ (turning greenish-brown)
Day 44+2+ (lightening, looser)
Day 5+5–6+3+ (mustard-yellow, seedy if breastfed)
Week 2 → ~6 weeks6–83+ daily (breastfed can be more)
6 weeks+6+Highly variable: once a day to once every few days can be normal

Urine should be pale and mild-smelling. Modern diapers are so absorbent that "wet" can be hard to judge. The wetness indicator line, or comparing weight against a fresh diaper, settles it.

Why output is the honest signal

You can't see how much milk goes into a breastfed baby, and bottle amounts don't prove absorption, but what comes out tracks what went in. Adequate wet diapers plus steady weight gain are the two markers that reassure a paediatrician more than any feeding schedule. It's also why cluster feeding almost never means low supply: if the diapers are on track, the milk is there.

When to call the doctor

  • Fewer wet diapers than days of life in week one, or fewer than 6 wet per 24 hours after day five.
  • Dark, concentrated urine; brick-red "dust" in the diaper past day four; or strong-smelling urine with fever.
  • No dirty diaper in the first 48 hours, white/pale stools at any age, or blood in the stool.
  • Signs of dehydration: dry mouth, sunken fontanelle, lethargy, crying without tears.

Trust the trend over any single diaper. One light diaper after a big sleep means nothing; a day of them means a phone call.

In Pipkin

Wet, dirty, mixed and dry are each one tap in Pipkin, loggable one-handed, mid-change, from the Home Screen widget. The day view keeps a running count, so "how many today?" is never a memory test at a 2am weigh-in of your own anxiety. And when the paediatrician asks, a one-tap PDF hands over the whole week's counts: feeds, diapers, weights.

The first-weeks rhythm, together

Diaper counts are a two-parent job in week one, because whoever did the last change knows something the other doesn't. A shared log means the 4am change and the 9am one land in the same count, with nothing to reconstruct over breakfast.

Quick answers

How many wet diapers should a newborn have per day?

Roughly one per day of life in the first week (one on day one, two on day two), reaching six or more per 24 hours from around day five. After the first week, six to eight wet diapers a day is typical.

How many dirty diapers is normal for a newborn?

At least one meconium stool in the first 24–48 hours, moving through green to mustard-yellow by day five, then three or more daily in the early weeks. After about six weeks, frequency varies hugely: daily to once every few days can both be normal.

When should I worry about wet diapers?

Call your paediatrician if a baby past day five has fewer than six wet diapers in 24 hours, urine is dark or strong-smelling, or there are dehydration signs like a dry mouth, lethargy or a sunken fontanelle.
